The Trail of Tears

Congress has designated a national historic trail to mark and commemorate the removal routes taken by Cherokees who were forced from their homelands in the 1800s. To assist with research and interpretation of the trail, the National Park Service has entered a partnership with the National Trail of Tears Association and several tribal nations. The Trail of Tears Association consists of volunteer chapters chartered in each state the Cherokees passed through on their 1836-38 forced emigration.
